Letter From a Reader

The jewellery I now wear every single day

A personal account of how a small London family boutique changed the way I think about jewellery at 68.

Wearing my favourite pieces from Julie & Mary Jewellery.

I am 68 years old, and for a long time I kept my jewellery in a box for special occasions. A weddings-and-funerals kind of drawer. Somewhere along the way I had decided that wearing something pretty on an ordinary Tuesday was a little too much, and so the box stayed closed.

What changed my mind was not a big moment. It was a small, quiet realisation that I felt more like myself on the days I wore something lovely. A good necklace or a pair of earrings does not ask for attention, but it lifts an outfit and, more importantly, it lifts me.

The trouble was finding pieces I actually wanted to wear. Much of what I saw was either too heavy, too fussy, or made to be worn once and forgotten. I wanted jewellery that was elegant, comfortable and easy to wear with the clothes I already own, and I did not want to pay a fortune for it.

Then I came across Julie & Mary Jewellery in London. I am going to tell you what I noticed, in my own words, because it is the letter I would have wanted to read before I ordered.

1Pieces that feel good to wear

The first thing I noticed was how comfortable everything is. Jewellery that pulls, pinches or weighs on you ends up back in the box, however pretty it is. These pieces sit nicely and I forget I am wearing them, which is exactly what I want from something I put on every morning.

"So comfortable to wear, I barely notice I’ve got it on even after a full day."

2Designs that look considered, not fussy

There is a gentle, classic elegance to the collection. Nothing shouts. Each piece looks thoughtfully made and goes with a plain jumper just as well as it does with a dressier outfit, so I find myself reaching for the same favourites again and again.

"Simple, elegant designs that go with almost everything I wear."

3Easy to wear, easy to give

I have bought for myself, and I have also chosen pieces as gifts. Because the designs are timeless rather than trendy, I never worry that the person will not like it or will not know what to wear it with. A thoughtful gift should feel effortless, and these do.

"Lovely pieces for both myself and gifts, with timeless designs that are easy to wear."

4A real boutique behind the screen

It matters to me that Julie & Mary Jewellery is a family business in London and not an anonymous website. When you are choosing something personal, it is reassuring to know that people who care about their work are on the other end.

"It feels reassuring to buy from a genuine family-run London boutique rather than a faceless website."

5Buying without the worry

Delivery is free with Royal Mail, and there is a 30-day money-back guarantee. For someone who likes to be sure before she commits, that made it very easy to say yes and try something properly.

"Free delivery and the 30-day money-back guarantee made ordering feel easy and reassuring."

What I would tell a friend

If you, like me, have a box of lovely things you save for best, I would gently suggest taking them out. And if your box is a little bare, or you simply want something new that feels like you, have a look at the Julie & Mary Jewellery collection. Wear it on an ordinary Tuesday. That is what it is for.

I do not usually write letters like this. But putting on a piece of jewellery each morning became a small pleasure again, and I wanted to pass that on. I hope you find something that makes you feel the same.
